The ponds in Zonhoven and surrounding areas were not dug, but were created by allowing water to flow on top of the ground. Dikes were built around meadows, after which they were flooded. The pond area is therefore an ingenious cultural landscape. To this day, various freshwater species are bred in many of these ponds, intended for fishing or consumption, as well as ornamental fish for garden ponds.
