The bronze sculpture "Icarus" on the Old Bridge is by Bernd Stöcker. Stöcker is one of the most important living German sculptors. Since 1997, the Bremen native has shared his studio in Triftern, Lower Bavaria, with his wife, the sculptor Ingrid Baumgärtner.

The Icarus sculpture is a bronze figure made by Bernd Stöcker in the middle of the Old Salzach Bridge in Burghausen. The figure also stands a second time in Puchheim near Munich on a former airfield.

      Construction
The "Icarus" is a 2.10 meter tall sculpture with a wingspan of five meters. The bronze figure is no lightweight at 300 kilograms. Special materials were used to make the wings: branches from the forest and wax. This makes the sculpture true to the Greek story of Icarus. In it, the tragic hero flees from an island with self-made wings; however, due to his youthful recklessness, he flies too close to the sun and the wax in his wings melts.

      History
The Icarus sculpture made by sculptor Bernd Stöcker dates from 1996. The work took a year to complete. The "Icarus" represents the survival spirit of humanity. Despite all the cruelty, man always starts over again. That is why he captured it in the moment of departure.

Since June 2013, the sculpture has been in Burghausen in the middle of the Old Salzach Bridge. The "Icarus" is on loan and is expected to remain in Burghausen until 2016.
