The horse is the heraldic figure of the Lords of Heimenhofen, who acquired the town in 1370. In contrast to the family coat of arms, the horse on the coat of arms is facing left. Only Markquard von Heimenhofen from Burgberg had a horse facing left in his coat of arms, as recorded in a document from 1381. This coat of arms could also have served as a template, as the document dates from the time when Oswald and Marquard von Heimenhofen acquired their Oberstdorf properties in 1351.

Oberstdorf was divided into 16 well neighborhoods. Each neighborhood had the right to fetch water from its well and to water livestock.
