The library is considered an example of classic postmodernism. It was built from 1984 to 1987 on the site of the old Tegel harbor as part of the 1987 International Building Exhibition by the American architect Charles Moore. The exterior architecture of the building is based on the classicism of the 19th century. Interior design refers to monastic libraries, industrial architecture, churches and shipyards. The monument erected in front of the library by the sculptor Detlef Kraft from 1997 depicts Wilhelm and Alexander von Humboldt, who spent their childhood nearby in Tegel Castle.
