The town hall of Aalst today consists of two historic parts. At the current courtyard is a former

country house whose history dates back to 1643-1645. This part of the town hall has been partly rebuilt in

rococo style in the late 18th century. The second part of the town hall, on the Grote Markt, is a neoclassical

construction by architect Louis Roelandt and dates from 1828.

Restoration works on various parts of the town hall complex took place between 1987 and 2009. For example, the interior of the banquet hall is being restored and the facade is being renovated. In 1991 the town hall complex is protected as a monument.

The courtyard of the town hall is apparently closed on Sundays.

The town hall of Aalst is located on the Grote Markt in Aalst, through the courtyard you reach the former country house.

      town hall

The neoclassical building along the market side was built around 1830 under the direction of the Ghent architect Louis Roelandt. Behind the facade, decorated with the city's coat of arms, is the city hall on the two floors. This is only accessible when accompanied by a guide.

Feel free to step through the green gate to the inner courtyard and further via the pedestrian passage to the rear courtyard of the town hall. There you can view the beautifully renovated rear facade.

      Country house

Around the courtyard are the Rococo-style buildings of the former mansion. They were built as residence and service buildings for the Main College of the Land of Aalst. The elaborate clock facade of the main building with sundial and oculus (a small round window) is flanked by the memorial of the fallen from 1830 and the bronze statue of Ondineke. Ondineke is the main character from the book 'De Kapellekesbaan' by Louis Paul Boon.

        Center of German Power

Even in wartime, the Markt van Aalst is the center of power in the city.

At the bottom of the belfry, food and goods are distributed for the needy population. The place is soon nicknamed the 'American store', after the origin of many of the products. The Urban Food Committee succeeds in providing the population with soap, rice, grain, milk, clothing or chocolate from all over the world for four years. Since 1916, the hated German 'Meldeamt' has also been established here. All men from 16 years old are obliged to come here

Sign Up. Many of them will be requisitioned for compulsory employment in the German war industry. In the winter of 1917, the German occupier opened a 'Soldatenheim' on the Markt in the building where the restaurant 'De Graaf van Egmont' is now located. This is a relaxation and meeting place for German soldiers. The stately white building with the flags to the right of the belfry is the town hall. Feel free to walk through the green gate. To the left of the entrance are the names of the war victims. In the courtyard you can admire the beautiful facades in Rococo style. The story goes that on 21 August 1914, the day after the conquest of Brussels, a company

Uhlans on horseback thunder in to claim the city treasury.
