It is 3 km long and up to 1 km wide. The shore is
often stony, some islands, with bushes and surrounded by thatch, protrude from the water. The Eider is the largest tributary.
To the north of the lake are the villages of Klein Barkau and Kirchbarkau. On the eastern side is the large estate of the Bothkamp estate. Another community is Bissee.
