Before the bridge was built, Schmalstede, Bruges, Bordesholm & Wattenbek were only accessible via a ford (for lorry traffic) & a wooden footbridge (for pedestrians). Due to the risk of accidents & high repair costs of the wooden footbridge, an application for a bridge was made at the Danish court & only approved in the 2nd attempt & then built in 1802 by Jasper Hatz from Brüggerdorf & completed in 1803.
