The Ludwig-Danube-Main Canal is an interesting story. Already in the 19th and 20th centuries it was a 172.4 km long waterway that connected the Danube near Kelheim and the Main near Bamberg. Later it was converted into the Rhine - Main - Danube Canal. Its remains appear again and again along the Altmühl. The old lock is particularly nice to see here.

A very well preserved lock with a pretty lock keeper's house on a remaining section of the Ludwig-Danube-Main Canal. It is worth stopping here. For those who come from Kelheim, the information boards on the canal are very instructive.
