It is a typical 13th century street beguinage with 11 narrow streets and 162 houses. On the front doors of the houses is a name of a saint or a Bible scene. Most of the houses date from the 17-18th century. Some have typical courtyards and gates. Originally, the houses were inhabited by beguines: single, religious women who could lead an independent life under the supervision of a grandmother. They took the vow of purity and obedience, but not of poverty. They lived among other things from weaving or lace embroidery. They were allowed to leave the beguinage freely, except that the gates remained closed in the evenings and on Sundays. Sister Agnes, the last Lier beguine, died in 1994. In the center of the beguinage you will find the Saint Margaret's Church.
The beguinage in Lier has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1998.

The Beguinage of Lier was founded in 1258.
It is a typical 13th century street beguinage with 11 streets and 162 houses. All houses have a name. A location for those who want to avoid the bustle of the city. Keep in mind that it can get quite busy here on weekends. We only come here on weekdays, then it is wonderful to be here.
