The Mosterdpot-Fermerijbeemden flooding area was the first to be built by the province of Antwerp after the major floods in 1998. In the event of heavy rainfall, the Goorbosbeek overflows into this basin, thus safeguarding the hinterlands. For peak times, when the flood zone offers insufficient relief, a pumping station is also provided to pump the Goorsbosbeek empty more quickly.
