The Sun Temple in the Court Garden, a small round temple, a so-called monopteros, was built in 1795 in honor of Louise, Duchess of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, the wife of the later King Frederick William III of Prussia. On the evening of June 12th of that year, a large public festival was held for the heir to the throne in the Court Garden, where everyone was welcome and admission was free. 6,000 lamps illuminated the park and a large fireworks display was set off.
