Linköping Castle is Sweden's oldest surviving secular building with parts from the 12th century, built into the western part of the castle. The castle is located high and west of the city center, near the cathedral. It has a strictly classicist façade in creamy white and a green copper roof. The area around Linköping was the seat of the Sverkerska family in the early Middle Ages and the center of monastic and church construction in Sweden. The castle was originally built as a diocese. The castle was since 1785 the residence of the governor of the county Östergötland.
