A monastery on the Vogelsberg has been handed down since the 13th century. The mountain was already inhabited in prehistoric and protohistoric times. The counts of Castell converted the preserved buildings into a Carmelite monastery. It was destroyed in the 16th century and the monks fled to Würzburg. The final dissolution took place in 1803. In 1957, church life moved into the buildings of the Vogelsburg.
