Old monastery bricks in the Zuidlaren village churchIn the lower part of the church walls you can see large bricks. In the Netherlands they are called "monastery bricks", bricks in the so-called monastery format. They are much more irregular than modern bricks. These bricks were made around 800 years ago in the field ovens on the Hunze, which were heated with peat from the Zuidlaarderveen.Groningen MonasteryWhen the previous wooden building burned down in 1232, the community in Zuidlaren decided that their next church should be built of stone. The bricks were made by the monastery in Aduard. This Groningen monastery was the largest commercial enterprise in the area at the time.
