In the inner courtyard of Ratzeburg Cathedral, there is a slightly raised bronze sculpture of a beggar with crutches. Ernst Barlach designed the figure as one of three modern figures of saints for the façade of St. Catherine's Church in Lübeck. Originally, more figures were planned, but after the Nazis came to power in 1933, further execution was prevented.
The figure in Ratzeburg is a cast that was installed in the cathedral courtyard in 1979. The beggar is not a typical figure of a saint, but is deliberately designed as an everyday person who retains his dignity despite his difficult fate. Data on the work: Ernst Barlach: The Beggar (1930-33, bronze, installed in 1979)

Barlach always has a special appeal for me. Expressive people, theological background and strong impressions on the viewer. My first non-access to Barlach's art was Alfred Andersch's novel when I was reading it at school, and it was only later that I understood more about Barlach's art.
