This water is called Het Oude Diepje, formerly also called De Raken or Oude Reitdiep. Until the early 17th century, the Oude Diepje was part of the Reitdiep. In 1629, a canal was dug near Garnwerd, making this part of the Reitdiep. The Oude Diepje has the appearance of a stream valley as a result of centuries of silting up of soil in the time when it was still part of the Reitdiep. The ground silted up in places up to 2 meters.

This stretch along the water is as Dutch as it gets. Farmland with green pastures, sheep, horses and cows. And hopefully a beautiful blue Dutch sky above.

Flat, grain and cow and horse. If you're lucky some sheep clouds. Nice to walk here once as a Randstad resident. But it is not the most varied part of the Netherlands.
