The fort was built from 1869-1879. It was originally of strategic importance to secure the estuary. But since it was not needed, parts were blown up after the war and it slowly fell into disrepair. After extensive restoration, it is now a museum and the only remaining German naval artillery fort.

The Fort Kugelbake is a former naval fortress in Cuxhaven in today's spa district Döse. It is located on the last headland at the Elbe estuary behind the sea dike near the eponymous landmark of the Kugelbake. The fort was built between 1869 and 1879 in a strategic position at the mouth of the river, to block with his 14 coastal guns enemy warships, then the French, the access to the Elbe. Today it is the last surviving artillery port of the Navy on the German North Sea coast. (Source: Wikipedia)
