Location + history: The 11 km long Botnanger Cuckoo Trail runs in the west of Stuttgart. Botnang is the only district of Stuttgart that is completely surrounded by forest. The circular hiking trail leads almost exclusively through forest areas around Botnang, through the Knaupenbachtal and past the Buberlesweiher and Metzgerbach. On the way, the hiker crosses a former Roman road that led from Strasbourg via Pforzheim and Leonberg to Cannstatt.
The symbol of Botnang is the cuckoo. Legend has it that the Duke of Württemberg heard a cuckoo calling and wished the Botnangers would get him the bird's nest. He well knew that the cuckoo's nest is the whole forest, and so the Botnanger had to cede the forests around the place.
The hiking tour can be walked well at any time of the year. It is advisable to take the short extension to the Birkenkopf to enjoy one of the most beautiful views of Stuttgart.
