        History of the castle

In 1453, the rich Humpiss merchant family from Ravensburg, who also had several mayors there, bought Ratzenried Castle with around 30 associated farms for 4,500 guilders as a fief of the St. Gallen monastery. A year later, they obtained lower jurisdiction over the Ratzenrieder district from the emperor in Vienna, and in 1495 the emperor also granted them high jurisdiction. Thus, the Ratzenried rule was born as a kind of small state.

Old Humpiss' sons, Hans and Jacob, received the title of nobility from the emperor and now called themselves "von Ratzenried". In 1498 they divided the rule into two halves: Jos expanded the Upper Castle into the largest servants' castle in the Allgäu for 11,000 guilders. His younger brother Jacob, however, built a new castle in the village, which was then still called Wetzelsried, on the site of the Wetzelsried Maierhof. The construction of this castle was completed in 1502.
