Heartwells are witnesses of the past, they remind us of how our ancestors had to laboriously fetch water. The sod maker had to build a cylindrical hole vertically down to the groundwater, which was no easy undertaking either.
Here is the 57 m deep, the deepest well in Switzerland.
It was used from 1545 to 1632, after which it was filled in.
In 1960 the fountain was cleaned and illuminated.

A dug shaft well is referred to as a sod or sod well, the mostly round well shaft of which is sunk down to the groundwater level and mostly lined with dry-layered rubble stones or pebbles. The well needs a lifting device to help lift the water to the surface. There are simple wells, draw wells with a reel, gallows wells or pump wells.
Castle wells are often heart wells.

Old heart well on the wayside. I only found out later that this is said to be the oldest in Switzerland
