Praça do Município

The Praça do Município is a harmoniously proportioned square surrounded by Pombaline buildings.
It was built after the earthquake of 1755 to house the Senate, whose palace had been on the Rossio until then.
With the erection of the Senate building at this point, Marquês de Pombal wanted to symbolically connect the local with the central power.
In the center of the square and opposite the Paços do Concelho rises the spiral-shaped pillory crowned with an armillary sphere, which has become a symbol of urban independence.
