In 1412, the stream was known as "Gryna" and later as "Grünau." It got its name from the originally abundant occurrence of freshwater pearl mussels. A legend about the name change relates to a pearl discovery. Between 1733 and 1952, officially appointed "pearl inspectors" based in the "Perlenhaus" fished for mussels and searched for pearls.[3] This was initially a margravial and later a royal Bavarian privilege. Today, the pearl mussel is almost extinct there as well.
