Let's take the 48 Pfennig way under our feet.
It got its name because years ago the stone crushers were employed here.
Here they were registered as being present at their workplace.
A stamp office, if you will.
From here they were assigned their personal workplace.
I don't know whether the 48 pfennigs were the basic wage they received from here, or whether they were paid according to performance, how many tons of usable rock they hammered out of the granite.
What is special, a "48 Pfennig-Weg" exists in Germany only here in Bad Harzburg.
