According to legend, the Pumppelz is a small, rough-haired goblin who resides in Gumpelstadt and jumps on the hikers' necks if they have bad manners, dark thoughts or evil intentions. He puts rude and ill-intentioned hikers back on the right path with slaps in the face. But unless one is up to no evil, he is said to be very peaceful and friendly, and sometimes even cheerfully accompany the wanderers.

The Pummpälzweg begins below the Wartburg train bridge near Eisenach and leads a total of 27 km through an enchanting landscape via Ruhla to the Frankenstein near Bad Salzungen.

Along the way you will come across 22 fabulous locations and information boards about the legends of Ludwig Bechstein and Christian Ludwig Wucke. Enchanting wooden sculptures from the Empfertshausen carving school illustrate the legends of the goblin Pumpälz.

The scariest legend is explained at the "Hirschstein" sculpture location above the Hohe Sonne. A little further south on the Rennsteig, a water treading area provides relaxation, which gives your feet a Kneipp treatment and gets you in shape for the rest of the way.

If the entire Pummpälzweg seems too long, you can start the path at the Hohe Sonne. The path is about 6 km shorter. Parking and public transport connections are available at Hohe Sonne.

The Pummpälzweg is a cycling and hiking trail in Thuringia. The Pummpälzweg runs over a length of 28 kilometers from Eisenach via Ruhla, the Kissel and Profisch to Bad Salzungen.
In this section, the Pummpälzweg runs on a beautiful hiking trail from the drawbridge of the Wartburg down to the Sängerwiese.
According to the legend, the Pummpälz is a small, wire-haired goblin who resides in Gumpelstadt and jumps on the back of the hikers' necks with bad manners, dark thoughts and bad intentions. He slaps rude and ill-disposed hikers back on the right track.
But if you are up to no evil, it should be very peaceful and friendly, and sometimes even happily accompany the hikers.

This path leads downhill towards Mariental, it is sometimes very narrow and very steep, so extreme caution is required, especially for me as I am still using crutches.
