"The Bergerbosch is certainly the largest forest in Kennemerland and cannot be compared in character to any other forest in the region", said Frederik van Eeden in 1882. The size is no longer so impressive, but the Bergerbos is still special. The bottom consists of old dunes that have been partially covered by young dunes on the west side. In the vicinity of restaurant Duinvermaak, the sand threatened to push over the Huis van Bergen estate. That is why the dune was laid down and the blowing sand could form steep slopes here. The old estate character can still be recognized very well in the forest. In the original design, made for Esquire Studler van Surck, the long parallel avenues formed visible axes. Sparrenlaan and Jan Willemslaan still lead your view to the Oude Hof. The old forest part lies between these avenues. You will find jagged oaks with an undergrowth of mosses or lush holly, another typical companion of old forest.
