The Fort van Kessel was built in 1909-1912 to protect the Antwerp-Herentals and Kleine Nete railway line. At the start of the First World War, trenches were dug and barbed wire laid up to Fort van Lier. Almost no passage was left, and all the cattle were brought within the ring of the forts. In 1914 the fortress was heavily destroyed by the German Fat Berthas.

Fort Kessel is a protected monument and recreational area that is somewhat hidden in the middle of the green nature.
