The Fort van Kessel was built in 1909-1912 to protect the Antwerp-Herentals and Kleine Nete railway line. At the start of the First World War, trenches were dug and barbed wire laid up to Fort van Lier. Almost no passage was left, and all the cattle were brought within the ring of the forts. In 1914 the fortress was heavily destroyed by the German Fat Berthas.

Fort Kessel is a protected monument and recreational area that is somewhat hidden in the middle of the green nature. Where once the "big Bertha" projectiles flew around your ears, it is now an oasis of peace. The fort houses an army of (protected) bats and is home to a unique collection of fauna and flora.

The fort is not freely accessible, but you can walk around the fort moat, visit the fort under supervision and fish on the fort moat.
