This place has multiple meanings for the Freesians. Here is the monument of King Ludwig II, who gave Gefrees (again and definitively) town rights in 1880. That is why the Luitpolthöhe is also referred to as a "monument". Since 1336, Gefrees belonged to the rule of the Zoller burgraves of Nuremberg, later the Margraves of Brandenburg-Bayreuth. In documents from the years 1403 and 1444 Gefrees was already called "city" at that time. Gefrees had city rights with magistrate's own rights. Gefrees has belonged to Bavaria since the Treaty of Paris in 1810.
Louis II
"After the surveys carried out had shown that the market town of Gefrees, district office of Berneck, had already been granted city rights by the sovereign in 1544 and that the same city was often designated as a city in official and non-official transactions in the last century, we find ourselves at the most humble request persuaded the said community to most graciously approve the inclusion of the same in the class of cities. After this you have received the enclosures of the report from January 23rd ds. js to decide further."
The traditional morning pint takes place on the Luitpolthöhe every year on the Meadow Festival Monday (weather permitting). This day is an unofficial holiday in Gefrees. Then you see crowds of people streaming towards the “monument”. Some spare no effort and even pull a cart up the mountain with everything you need (blankets, a hearty snack and of course a cold beer). At 11 a.m., we will march together with musical accompaniment down into the city.

There are beautiful paths and trails to explore around the monument. To the north with beautiful views over Gefrees. To the south you almost have the feeling that you can touch the Ochsenkopf.
