In the early 16th century, the town of Torgau was the most important brewing town in all of Saxony. Since the founding of the town in the 12th century, around 285 plots of land, the so-called brewer's heirs, have had the right to brew beer. At the beginning of the 16th century, around 1,560 brews of beer were produced in the winter half-year, producing around five million liters of the famous Torgau beer. The main customers were the cities of Leipzig and Halle. As a holiday beer, it was served on special occasions and was also highly praised by Martin Luther.
