In 1452 there was already the first bear pit at Hartenfels Castle. The tradition has been preserved to this day, although it was long interrupted between 1760 and 1950. In 2015 the ditch was renovated and currently three bears live there: schloss-hartenfels.de/schlossgeschichten_baeren.html.

Here you can stay longer and watch the bears. In March 2021, the bear pit was made a little more species-appropriate.
