Unlike the medieval main gates, the Ludwigstor is a child of Classicism. It was built between 1849 and 1851. The reason was the rapid growth of Nuremberg in the 19th century. More breakthroughs through the old city fortifications were simply needed to cope with the increasing traffic. It was designed by Bernhard Solger, an important Nuremberg city master builder, who shaped the strict, antiquarian style of that era.
