Ulm Town Hall

Not far from the Ulm Minster is the Ulm Town Hall, which immediately captures the eye with its opulent exterior frescoes from the early Renaissance.
The oldest part of today's Ulm town hall, the southeast main building, originated in the year 1370. The richly decorated astronomical clock was attached around 1520 at the Ulmer city hall. The magnificent façade painting was also extended to the old building and displays representations of virtues, commandments and vices. The painting that can be seen today dates back to 1900, when the painting, largely destroyed by the weather, was restored.
The interior of the Ulm town hall was heavily damaged in 1944 by a fire. However, the entire ground floor and the first floor remained undamaged.

The oldest part is a building in today's north wing. In 1357 it is referred to as the "Gewandhaus" and in 1362 as the "Kaufhaus". In addition to iron and salt, one of the main focuses of trade at this time was fabrics, especially the Barchent. In 1369, the saddlers were also given the right to sell their goods there. In 1370 the current east wing was added as an extension - at that time also known as the "new department store". An 8 m high butchers' sales hall was located on its ground floor. An associated pointed arch gate on the south side is still available today. In 1383 the building was also referred to as the "courthouse" because it now had an arbor open to the north on the ground floor, where the lower court met in public.
