Originally, the Kurkölnische Saalhof was owned by the Archbishop of Cologne. This is where the jurisdiction had its seat. It used to be the most important secular building in the city. In 1810 the French administration tore down the Saalhof. According to experts, the building components of the Kurkölnischer Saalhof came from the early Franconian times. To date, no image of this building has been found. The rebuilt building is now called the Altkölnischer Saal.
