In 1867, when Graal and Müritz were still two separate villages, initiated the monastery pastor Friedrich Bunge († 1889 in Garwitz) of neighboring Ribnitz a Kirchneubau in Graal. The various attempts Bunges failed in each case at the upper church authority until Grand Duke Friedrich Franz IV of Mecklenburg-Schwerin heard it and also campaigned for the establishment of a church. Bunge was honored for his perseverance on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the consecration of the church with a memorial stone located in front of the east side of the church.

In 1903, the first negotiations for construction began and in 1908 construction began under the direction of the Privy Councilor Gotthilf Ludwig Möckel, who also designed the Jagdschloss Gelbensande, which was located in the immediate vicinity. The Lukaskirche was inaugurated on 18 October 1908 in the presence of the Grand Duke Friedrich Franz IV of Mecklenburg-Schwerin and wife Alexandra. Until the completion of the construction work, all church activities, even the confirmation classes, took place in Ribnitz-Damgarten. The Grand Ducal couple were the godparents of the first two children baptized in the church, who were given the names Friedrich Franz and Alexandra in his honor.

On the occasion of the 100th anniversary, the church building was given the name "Lukaskirche" on the anniversary of Saint Luke, 18 October 2008, in the presence of Bishop Andreas von Maltzahn.

It was designed on behalf of Grand Duke Friedrich Franz IV and inaugurated on October 18, 1908. Curiously, the tower is not located in the west as usual.
