The "Memorial on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the Hamburg firestorm in Rothenburgsort" is a project by Volker Lang. The proportions of the small building - on a reduced scale of 1: 2.5 - are based on a “terrace house”. This type of building was developed around 1880 for workers' quarters in Hamburg and shaped the character of the Rothenburgsort district until it was destroyed. Inside are fragments from accounts of people who witnessed the bombing and fragments from literary texts. The memorial is open every first and third Sunday of the month from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

In July and August 1943, Hamburg was badly hit by Allied air raids in "Operation Gomorrah", especially the districts in the east - Rothenburgsort, Hamm, Hammerbrook and Borgfelde - were almost completely destroyed. There were more than 30,000 dead.
On the 60th anniversary of the air raids in 2003, it was decided to use this memorial to commemorate the dead. The design was realized by Volker Lang. Shown is a miniaturized terrace house, which was typical for the narrow backyard buildings of Rothenburgsort

On the 60th anniversary of the air raids in 2003, the Hamburg-Mitte district assembly decided to erect a memorial in memory of the victims of the Second World War and the tyranny. It was also intended to commemorate the destruction of the particularly badly devastated parts of the city.
