Hiking Highlight
The Weißensee is a 2.3 km long lake with a circumference of 6.1 km in the district Ostallgäu in Bavaria west of Füssen on the northern edge of the Alps. Only 500 meters further south is the higher Alatsee. The name Weißensee either derives from its white-shimmering appearance due to deposited lime or is explained by the fact that around 600 AD an Alemane named Wizo settled down here.
With a length of 2.2 kilometers from east to west, a mean width of almost 600 meters and a depth of up to 25 meters, it covers an area of 1.35 square kilometers and has a catchment area of almost 15 square kilometers.
