The Bastaltabbau on the Zeilberg at Maroldsweisach attracts many visitors who want to see the extraction of volcanic eruption rock with their own eyes. On an additional eight hectares and up to 310 meters in depth (60 meters lower than at present), the opencast mine will be expanded in the next few years, a gigantic project. Every year, the Basalt Actien Company excavates up to 900,000 tonnes of rock in its volcanic crater.
