The Fridtjof Nansen House is named after the Norwegian polar explorer, diplomat and Nobel laureate Fridtjof Nansen. He received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1922 for his work with the League of Nations for the repatriation of prisoners of war from Russia. Göttingen is the house in Merkelstr. 4 also known by its old name "Levinsche Villa". The rich cloth manufacturer Ferdinand Levin built the building around 1900. Today, the Goethe-Institut is based in the Fridtjof-Nansen-Haus.

In 2018, after the Goethe-Institut moved out, the beautiful building on Schillerwiesen was sold to Hogrefe-Verlag

Among the many beautiful villas in Göttingen, the Levinsche Villa is certainly one of the most impressive and largest!
