Riale / Z'Chärbach (1731 m) is the highest Walser settlement in Val Formazza. The Walser German name «Chärbäch», comes from the mountain stream Toce, which winds across the marshes ("chert").
The Walser settlements in the Val Formazza and Pomatt are the only ones that border directly on the ancestral land of the Walser in Goms in the Upper Valais.
