This area, originally the kitchen garden of the war veterans’ home (Invalidenhaus), became a park in 1843 and accessible to the public from 1850.  It housed a war memorial and the Church of Grace (Gnadenkirche) built from 1891 to 1895 in memory of Empress Augusta.
The park was destroyed in the Second World War, the memorial in 1948, and the dilapidated church demolished in 1967; after that, the area languished because of its proximity to the border installations (‘Berlin Wall’).
The entire park was renewed in 1992-97, after a design by landscape architects Atelier Phusis in co-operation with Christophe Girot.  In the lawn is a pool, the ‘Invalidenbrunnen’ or ‘Mauer-brunnen,’ from which a narrow, walkable, granite sculpture protrudes.  Girot called it The Sunken Wall (die versunkene Mauer), a “sign to the future.”  It reminds of the former church on the site and the Berlin Wall nearby.

Here you can stay for a moment after the traffic stress on Invalidenstraße and get some air.

What you do not see from the street: the wall is accessible! As a reward, there is a great view, see photos.
