Nikos Kazantzakis was one of the most important Greek writers of the 20th century.
His most famous novel Alexis Sorbas (1946) was made into a film by Michael Cacoyannis in 1964 with Anthony Quinn in the lead role.
His grave is on the southern Martinengo bastion of the Venetian city walls of Heraklion; because of his unorthodox views, he was denied burial in a churchyard. The epitaph reads:
"Δεν ελπίζω τίποτα. Δε φοβούμαι τίποτα. Είμαι λέφτερος. "
("Den elpízo típota. De fovoume típota. Íme léfteros." -
“I hope nothing. I fear nothing. I am free.")

The completely unorthodox grave complex leaves the visitor, who has read Kazantzakis' novels and modeled his Cretan pride, pensive. The Kazantzakis Museum is also recommended.

The publisher Langen+Müller writes about the book: "I felt again what a simple and plain thing happiness can be – a glass of wine, a chestnut, a miserable brazier, or the sound of the sea." A masterpiece about the love of life, the award-winning novel still stands for a philosophy of joie de vivre. In his famous work, Nikos Kazantzakis created one of the most striking free spirits in world literature, to whom Anthony Quinn paid tribute in the film adaptation of the same name. Light-hearted and passionate, the novel tells the story of a brooding writer who retreats to Crete to manage a mine. From then on, he clings to the modern-day good-for-nothing Alexis Zorba, who has perfected the infectious art of "loving life and not fearing death." Kazantzakis paints a unique picture of Greece, its people, its culture, and its music. A literary dance in daring language. - A classic of world literature - The basis of the famous film adaptation with Anthony Quinn
