Near the fortress, there is a spectacular view of the so-called "Naxus Turn" or "Heraklion Turn." This maneuver is particularly striking and looks spectacular from the ground or from the air: After taking off from runway 27, aircraft initially climb over the sea. This is followed by a sharp left turn to avoid flying over neighboring islands or populated areas at low altitude and to minimize noise pollution over densely populated areas. After the turn, the aircraft sets off on its final course. This will be visible until the new Kastelli Airport is completed (planned for 2027).

The historic Koules fortress (also called Castello a Mare) on the old harbor of Heraklion in Crete. The Republic of Venice built the fortress in the early 16th century to protect the harbor. During the Ottoman period, the building sometimes served as a prison. The name Koules comes from Turkish and means "tower" or "fortress".
