Kloster is a captivating settlement nestled on the northern part of Hiddensee, a tranquil, car-free island in the Baltic Sea, off the coast of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany. Situated beneath the gentle slopes of the Dornbusch highland, this historic village, standing at an elevation of 8 meters above sea level, serves as the cultural heart of the island. Its name, meaning "monastery" in German, harks back to the Cistercian monastery of St. Nicholas, which once thrived here, shaping the island's early history…

The island church in Kloster is the oldest building on Hiddensee. A magnificent little church that invites you to "take a break from everyday life" and is equipped with a few special features. Such as a "baptismal angel with baptismal bowl" that floats under the church ceiling and can be lowered during baptisms. A baptismal angel that brings the baptismal water directly from heaven, so to speak.

It is interesting that the church was initially built as a peasant church until 1322 as a "chapel in front of the monastery gate" and is now a seafarers' church in proper style with all its decoration and the maritime color scheme implemented after 1964 on the advice of the TU Dresden. Especially since the monastery was once dedicated to the patron saint of sailors, Nicholas. The "Hiddenseer Rosenhimmel" (sky of roses) made of wild roses was created almost overnight by the painter and bon vivant Max Nikolaus Niemeier. The church tax had been waived for him.
