Besançon is one of the few cities with a hôtel de ville and a town hall. Weddings and other ceremonies are held in this 16th-century building with bosses on the facade in blue and ocher stone.

Besançon town hall is in the historic city center (La Boucle) of the capital of Doubs and Franche-Comté. The facade and roofs of the building have been classified as historic monuments since December 17, 1912. A town hall was built place du Huit-Septembre in 1393, on the site of the current building, between the current Saint-Pierre church in Besançon and the Besançon courthouse. The architect Richard Maire modifies and enlarges the building in 1573. It presents a facade with bosses in the spirit of the palaces of the Italian Renaissance. A large niche in the facade housed until the French Revolution a bronze statue of Emperor Charles V riding a two-headed eagle (coat of arms of Besançon).
