In the proverbial "old days," many parts of the Eifel were mining areas for coal and ore. While in the early days, these were "pingen" (open-pit mines with vertically downward-excavated holes), later horizontal tunnels were also driven into the mountains. This work was not without danger; many a miner lost his life in a mining accident.

This hill with a chapel is dedicated to Saint Barbara, patron saint of miners, and is dedicated to the memory of the miners who died in accidents. Saint Barbara's feast day in the calendar of saints is December 4th.
