Starting with the prayers for peace in the Nikolaikirche, the protest conquered public space in 1989. A pillar from the nave, topped with palm fronds, has been recreated in the square. The project by the Leipzig artist Andreas Stötzner symbolically carries the idea of departure out of the church. Two thirds of the funds required for construction were provided by donations from citizens, companies and institutions.
