  • Romanesque church of St. Johannes, Stugl/Stuls
The Romanesque church of St. Johannes stands on a small, rocky hill in Stugl/Stuls. Inside there are well-preserved Gothic wall paintings by an unknown Italian master from the school of Giotto di Bondone. They cover the entire interior of the church and were probably built around 1360/70.

  • Romanesque church of St. Johannes, Stugl/Stuls
The east-facing, almost 10 meter long building forms a wide rectangle that is covered with a deep barrel vault. This is followed by the choir with an apse, which tapers towards the east. It is covered with a cross vault, above which rises the tower from the beginning of the 17th century. What is striking about the tower, which is covered by a pointed helmet that is flattened at the bottom, is the asymmetrical extension next to the bell window.
On the northern outer wall there are remains of paintings from two different times. From the lower layer on the left comes the early Gothic depiction of Christopher and the former church patron John the Baptist from around 1300. In an upper layer on the right, St. George's fight with the dragon was depicted. This depiction is by the same artist who painted the interior of the church.
A pulpit without a sound cover is in front of the choir on the left. In the middle there is a baptismal table on which the Lord's Supper is celebrated according to the Reformed Graubünden custom.
Pictures: During a total renovation in the summer of 1956 under the direction of the architect W. Gattiker, previously covered wall paintings by an unknown painter were uncovered by Bonifaz Engler, which cover the entire interior of the church in three panels. The frescoes come from an Italian master from the school of Giotto di Bondone and were probably created around 1360/70.
