In 1987, the workforce of the steelworks in Duisburg-Rheinhausen began the fight against its closure. The population showed great solidarity with the workers. In December 1987 they occupied the Rhine bridge in Duisburg together. A month later, workers from all over Germany put up the “Bridge of Solidarity” sign.

The Bridge of Solidarity is the longest tied arch bridge in Germany and leads over the Rhine from Duisburg-Hochfeld to Duisburg-Rheinhausen.
