The bridge was opened in 1950 and connects the Duisburg districts Rheinhausen and Hochfeld at the level of the Rheinpark. It was named "Bridge of Solidarity" on January 20, 1988 during the month-long protests against the closure of the Krupp steelworks in Rheinhausen, when 50,000 workers from 60 huts demonstrated on the bridge.

      Schimanski filming location
In "Loverboy" Schimanski drives his Citroen over the bridge that connects Rheinhausen and Hochfeld on the way to Holland. In »Tooth for a tooth«, Shimei tries to catch up with the journalist Ulli in the rental car in the old Mercedes. Later he sped one more time on his way to Grassmann over this bridge.

A new road bridge was built from July 1945 and opened to traffic on July 3, 1950. In the place of the earlier construction, an arched rod was used based on a proposal by Krupp Stahlbau Rheinhausen. At 255.9 meters, this has the largest span in Germany.
