The dunes were created after the last ice age. Under the dune sand lies an old moraine that is occasionally blown free and shows signs of settlement such as the megalithic bed of Nebel, furrows and archaeological finds.

In 1971 the ordinance for the NSG became legally binding. On December 6, 1989, the ordinance was expanded. The Öömrang Ferian, a local heritage association, took over the care of the area.

In 2014, a replica of an Iron Age house was completed near Vogelkoje Meerum, reminiscent of earlier forms of settlement in this area. Since the house is in the NSG, a special permit had to be granted.
