From the top you have a great vision! You should definitely be prepared for strong winds and have a jacket with you to really enjoy it. The later the day, the stronger the wind!

As already described above, the light of the old lighthouse could not be seen far too far and in bad weather in the clouds almost not. No wonder that more than 6000 capsized in the rocks at the Cape. And given the water temperatures, there was little hope of getting ashore alive. In addition, surf and a few sailors could swim. The extremely bright light from the new lighthouse now goes up to 90km out to sea.
Due to Corona (Dec 2021) very few visitors here. That was of course pleasant.

The destination can be reached by stairs on foot or by a small funicular railway. The latter leads from the parking lot close to the older of the two lighthouses. This was built on the highest point of the cliff in 238 m above sea level in 1859. However, since this first lighthouse is too high and too far from the coast, its light lost itself in the fog, which forms too often at its height. At 900 hours a year, the cone of light was relatively rarely visible from afar. This led in 1911 to the sinking of a ship called Lusitania, with over 700 people on board (not to be confused with that ship, which was sunk in 1915 by a submarine). Therefore, a new lighthouse was built at only 87 meters above the sea closer to the water at the so-called Diaz Point. From the old lighthouse to the vicinity of the new, a hiking trail leads along the steeply sloping cliff walls. At the end of the path there is an observation deck overlooking the new lighthouse.
