Commemorative plaque for the former synagogue
After the town fire in 1870, the synagogue room in the backyard at Markt 9 was rebuilt, but the Jewish community - first mentioned in writing in 1334 - was merged with that of Wilsnack and the synagogue in Havelberg was then closed a few years later.
Nowadays there is a commemorative plaque on the wall of the house at Markt 9 - right next to the town hall - to the former Jewish church.
The inscription "Never again racial hatred! Never again racial madness!" is intended to commemorate the pogroms of Jews in Germany on the night of November 9th and 10th, 1938.
There had also been anti-Semitic riots in Havelberg, which, however, "only" resulted in damage to property.goruma.de/staedte/havelberg/wandern
